I'm excited as hell, because I've just got the chance to talk to Uwe Boll and ask him a few questions. This is the first interview we've had on the site, and I'm very happy that Uwe has spoken to us. He might not be a very popular director, but I think you have to give it to him, because I don't think anyone has received as much flak as he has, yet still carries on making movies. One of the first articles I wrote here was I Respect Uwe Boll, so here we have it.
KarlHungus.com - First of all Uwe, let me just say that I have a great amount of respect for you, and I do enjoy watching your movies. My fellow writer Craig J. (He writes on karlhungus.com as Whedon, and contributed some of these questions) is a big fan of yours, he loves your work, and would like to pass on his compliments to you. I know you've a few other fans who read this website, so before I start with the questions, is there anything you'd like to say to the readers?
Uwe Boll - Go on imdb and vote my movies up!
KH - I've read that you're working on Bloodrayne 3. Taking the action to the wild west for Bloodrayne 2 was an inspired idea, will number 3 be the familiar 1940's setting of the games, or are you going to have another surprise in store for us?
UB - Bloodrayne 3 will be a second world war story.
KH - You seem to focus on video game adaptations the most, will you be continuing this way or will you be working on more original scripts?
UB - Both
KH - You have quite a lot of big actors in your films, can I ask who has been your favourite to work with?
UB - Michael Pare, Will Sanderson, Kristanna Loken, Leelee Sobieski.
KH - I've heard that you're planning to re-edit House of the Dead, can you tell us a little about that?
UB - The dvd comes out next month with LIONSGATE ..the funny version.
KH - Some people have said that Heart of America was cashing in on Columbine, what do you have to say about that?
UB - Cashing in? We made no money with the movie. It is a movie to show that school violence happens not because of violent videogames, movies or heavy metall movies. Violence has multiple reasons.
KH - PETA have endorsed the film Seed, that seems an unusual partnership, how did that come about?
UB - I used PETA footage to show what the human nature is. I give PETA 2.5% of the SEED revenues.
KH - Are you working on any other upcoming films you'd like to tell us about?
UB - Right now I focus on getting my movies released.
KH - The initial cut of Sanctimony and subsequent American DVD release was 90 mins yet the R2 release is only 83. What exactly was cut and why?
UB - I don't know. I know we had to cut the rape to get an R RATING. Maybe they cut more without telling me?
KH - After working with Stephen Dorff on Alone in the Dark it seemed almost inevitable that he would be cast as Jack Carver in Far Cry. Was there any particular reason you went with Til Schweiger instead?
UB - Dorff is a prick. Til Schweiger is a better actor and fits better in the role.
KH - The opening of Postal has received a lot of criticism due to the subject matter, are you concerned that it will turn people off going to see the film?
UB - I give a shit. POSTAL is the best and most important movie of the century.
I'd like to say thanks to Uwe for doing the interview, and thanks to Whedon for submitting some of the questions.

That's why the man is my fucking hero. I love all his films, and I get a lot of shit from people about it but I'm not ashamed of it and anyone who reads the interview has to see what a genius Dr. Boll is.
Fucking legend. He's awesome.
I gotta agree lads. He's certainly a legend, even if you're not a fan.
"Dorff is a prick"
HA ha ha!
That is so refreshing, usually the directors are annoyingly diplomatic.
"Dorff is a prick" .... brilliant!
Uwe Boil are teh suk. I have no idea how this guy keeps getting movie rights to video games. House of the Dead and Alone in the Dark were complete failures. And just my luck, he'll probably attain the rights to a Halo movie and ruin that franchise. I guess it had a good run. He is not legendary or awesome. Please Boll, retire.

He is legendary though, and you don't have to like him to recognise that.
However, you'll be pleased to know, there is a film version of Halo in production, and Dr. Boll has nothing to do with it. Happy?
What's so "Legendary" about him? That he beat up some nerd/basement dweller critics? My wife can do that. He lacks talent and just because he's outspoken, doesn't mean he's cool. Christopher Walken is cool. Uwe Boll is mediocre at best.
And, no, I'm not happy. They'll find a way to ruin the movie, even if they don't use Boil.
-LizardLips
As far as Halo goes, Peter Jackson is attatched as producer, so I think if any video game adaptation has hope of being excellent, it's going to be Halo.
Uwe isn't in the same league as Christopher Walken, and I'm not trying to say he's that kind of cool. I suppose it depends on your definition of legend though, perhaps infamous would suit?
Karl you are right Uwe is infamous. I am not sure if he really believes what he says or if he is putting on a show. So far every video game film he has created were Epic Failures. I do give him create for continuing to try however I really wish he would get over himself and see the truth.
You're right. Comparing Boll with Walken isn't fair. Christopher Walken has talent and is so much higher on the food chain than Boll, that he probably wouldn't recognize him.
I'm sorry, but I fail to see anything cool or legendary about Uwe Boll. There is no display of genius or brilliance in any of his work. When Boll decides to leave filmmaking, he'll leave behind only a legacy of horrible films and aggression towards critics. He cannot silence critics with brilliance, so he'll just beat them up. Real mature.
I am not alone. I am but the tip of the iceberg when it comes to loathing Bolls work. Allow me some time to look up some of Bolls quotes and I'll report back. Until then, I'm glad that you enjoy the movies, not many do.

I know defenders of Dr. Boll aren't exactly numerous (Waits for Whedon to step in), but I do genuinely respect the guy.
He suffers a lot of abuse from people, and I think the fact that he still goes out there and makes movies, in spite of the insanely discouraging abuse shows a lot of character. That to me is worthy of admiration.
I do appreciate that a lot of people don't like his films, and I can certainly see why. I enjoy them for the over-the-top cheese factor, and I don't expect everyone to get that from his films. I do respect the guy, and I'm glad to have spoken to him.
I respect that he stays at it regardless of how he does not do well but as a fan of campy movies I have to see there is a big difference between Mr Boll's work and that of Lloyd Kauffman of Troma. Lloyd's work is not a real attempt at serious film work however I get the feeling that Mr Boll's attempts are and just come out campy. I have watched two of his films fully HotD and AOTD and could not even watch 10 minutes of Bloodrayne before becoming bored as hell. However I still go back to Tromeo and Juliet, Terror Firmer and others from the Troma catalog because they are campy fun.
Ah, but don't you see Wolfe? The fact that he does try to make serious films just adds to the "So bad it's good" factor. They're unintentionally hilarious a lot of the time.
The only reason he continues to make movies is because people continue to pay him. Not because he's revolutionary or has great spirit. He just has good luck in finding people to employ him.
I know this because if I made awful films, yet continued to get paid, I would continue to make awful films. Each one progressively worse than the other. So in short, his ability to make films in spite of abuse is not a reason to respect him. He only does it to get paid. Just like you and me, he's out to make money for himself.
Even if the movie totally bombs, which it will, he'll still have gotten paid.
I'll bet the only reason he wanted to get on PETA's good side is because he knows that some dumb, bored kid (just home from watching "Postal") is gonna stick a gun barrel in a cat and try to use it as a silencer.
Now he's making a "Far Cry" movie. I've yet to find some good quoteables but I'll be back for more. Goodnight.
-LizardLips
I will have to concede that Karl. His movies definitely could be on MST3K. I am thinking I need to watch them while drinking. :)
I don't know about you, but if I got the kind of abuse he does at my job, I'd find another job. It's enough for me to respect him.
I don't think he's making worse films, I think they're actually getting better, look at the scores on imdb for Postal and In The Name Of The King, they're quite higher, so it seems to be that his films are getting better.
Look, I'm not trying to convince anyone here he's revolutionary. You're talking to a fellow who's favourite directors are the likes of Lynch, Cronenberg, Kurosawa, Kitano, del Toro and so forth. Those guys are revolutionary, they're influential, and they've made extremely good movies.
I'm not saying Boll can even touch them, I'm just saying that his films are enjoyable on some levels. I'll be there to see Far Cry when it's out, because I know I'll be in for a fun ride.
Don't go knocking Dr. Boll. The man turns out some of the most enjoyable films you'll ever see. Sure some may be badly acted and directed but they are never less than entertaining.
And come on, Postal looks fucking amazing. The opening scene is one of the funniest things I have ever seen.
If that's the funniest thing you've ever seen, then you have problems. I'm sure that you're exagerrating, but I found that opening sequence to be of poor taste.
-LizardLips
There's an old saying amongst comedians, "It's not our fault our found it offensive". No one goes to watch a Boll film expecting sublte, thought provoking cinema. They go to laugh their ass of for 90 minutes, and in some rare cases even enjoy themselves.
None of his films are to be taken seriously, theyr'e some throw away fun that will get you through a slow afternoon.
Postal rocks hard. Saw it as Cannes this year and laughed my ass off through the whole thing.
Granted, most of the audience left in disgust, but Boll has made a point of not pulling any punches in the name of conscientious satire, and you gotta respect that.
I can't stop laughing. The persona of Uwe Boll is the funniest thing. Such a legend. Seriously!
I am a big fan of Uwe Boll the director and Uwe Boll the person. I'm not kidding, I really love some of the movies. Okay I didn't like House of the Dead because it was pretty rediculous, and Bloodrayne I'm iffy with, but Alone in the Dark, Bloodrayne 2, Dungeon Siege, I love all 3 of those. It's nice to see somewhere where people aren't jumping on the Boll hate bandwagon!
