Martin Brest, Tony Scott and John Landis all share one thing in common. All three have helmed a Beverly Hills Cop film and if rumours are to believed Brett Ratner will soon be joining them. Given the success of other 80s franchises brought back for one last chance it was inevitable that Axel Foley would get another opportunity, even if the vast majority of the worlds populace couldn't really care.
The fact that Ratner is pencilled in to direct is at once a blessing and a curse. While the Rush Hour films are highly entertaining and fun they're also brain dead, repetitive and much like the rest of Ratner's output a bit bland. While it would be nice to see someone give Martin Brest another stab at celluloid credibility, after all his original version of Gigli is supposed to be quite decent it seems that we'll just have to make do with Ratners workmanlike capabilities. The prospect of Eddie Murphy getting all sweary again is something to be excited for as it's a commonly known fact that any Eddie Murphy film where he doesn't swear like a Motherfucker is destined to be garbage. For proof of this just look at The Nutty Professor, Norbit or Daddy Day Care.
At this time very little is know of the film though chances are the plot will concern Foley returning to LA to solve a crime which he'll only be accomplish after getting suspended and visiting at least one strip club. Judge Reinhold and John Ashton have been mentioned as returning and I'm pretty sure both are available, as lets face it neither have what can be considered careers any more. That said Ashton will soon be seen in the amazingly brilliant Gone Baby Gone so there's hope for him yet. The man really does deserve some proper roles, as does Reinhold for both have proven to be capable actors whom can do more than the comedic sidekick routine.
The sad thing is that when it does get released, Beverly Hills Cop 4 will more than likely be a kiddie friendly PG buddy comedy which the whole family can enjoy, well the select few adults whom felt that Murphy was nominated for the wrong film at last years Oscars will enjoy it I'm sure.

Let's hope this remains just a rumor. Some franchises are best left dead...
I'm pretty sure that Beverly Hills Cop 4 is more than a rumour. Tbh part 3 was a travesty of epic proportions. If they can ignore the studios calls for a generic buddy comedy and give us something more in line with part 1 or 2 then it could really work.
And when all things are considered any film which keeps Eddie Murphy away from a fat suit is a good thing.
I agree with Whedon all the way. Was there anyone out there asking for this after number three?!?
Then again, now that I think about it, they really don't have much to lose. Expectations ought to be reeeaaally low. But yeah, it would be uber-lame to turn it into some PG-rated "family" flick.
