When ever someone asks me which film makers influence me, the name or duo which always slips out first is the Coen Brothers. Since Blood Simple they have continuously crafted diverse and entertaining films and never repeated themselves. After Intolerable Cruelty and The Ladykillers their legacy seemed to be dwindling until this years absolutely fantastic No Country for Old Men. It ranks as one of the finest American films ever made and has classic written all over it.
The trailer for the Coens latest, Burn After Reading is something which I looked forward to with giddy child like glee. After watching it I have to admit that I'm slightly disappointed. The humour seems to be very Ladykillers-esque, which is a shame as I was really hoping for something more in line with The Big Lebowski.
A quick glance at the cast listing does bode well, Clooeny, Pitt, Malkovich and the obligatory McDormand role inspires a lot of confidence. The absence of Roger Deakins is unfortunate and it will be the first Coen Brothers film which he has not been involved with. All in all it would be advisable to mark October 17th in your calender and pray the Burn After Reading repeats the success of No Country for Old Men .

I may be one of the few that loved Intolerable Cruelty. This looks to be more like that with a dash of Fargo for good measure.
I don't dislike Intolerable Cruelty just feel that given the Coen's track record it's a very disappointing film. If Burn After Reading is anything like Fargo then it's guaranteed to be a masterpiece.
